Song of the Week – Bartolomeo and the Buzzing of Bees

July 11, 2010

Ted Leo sent a bit of a scare into his fans during an interview this week, when he alluded to the possibility of retiring from music.  Fortunately, he later clarified his statements and assured us he will not be retiring.  Like most of the other artists I’ve featured in these Song of the Week posts, you’ve probably never even heard of him in the first place…well, now you have.  Enjoy this track from his latest album (The Brutalist Bricks):

Human of the Week – Mike Judge

July 10, 2010

It was announced this week that the great Mike Judge is bringing his two prodigal cartoon sons – Beavis and Butt-head – back to MTV with 30 all-new episodes!  After his recent less-than-stellar efforts, such as Extract and The Goode Family, we’re thankful that the comic genius has decided to start dancing again with the ones who brung him.

Here’s hoping the new episodes will be on the air in time to revive the long-lost Super Bowl halftime extravaganza known as “Butt Bowl.”  That would definitely be an improvement over whatever crap passes as the official halftime show this year!

Song of the Week – Wallingford

July 4, 2010

Damien Jurado specializes in somber indie folk rock, which probably isn’t the most tantalizing sales pitch I could have used to convince you to give him a listen.  However, if you’re in the mood for a melodically feedback-drenched fever dream (and let’s face it, who isn’t while we’re right smack in the middle yet of another oppressive Summer), then this Song of the Week should be just what the doctor ordered…

Human of the Week – Tommy Hunter

July 3, 2010

Riding the euphoria of yet another win by the Texas Rangers, I am inspired to begin a new recurring feature: Human of the Week.  And it’s no coincidence that I mentioned the Rangers, because the first-ever winner of this prestigious award is none other than their hottest starting pitcher at the moment: Tommy “Big Game” Hunter.

Mere hours ago, on his 24th birthday, the rotund right-hander won his 5th decision of the season without a loss.  The scales may show him approaching 300, but his ERA is below 2.00…what’s not to love about that???

So, congratulations to our inaugural Human of the Week, Tommy Hunter!

Sure, I’ve heard them a million times, but even after all these years, I’m still not tired of ’em! What three “overplayed” songs do you still love?
